Telekom Malaysia Reveals Fiber-Optics Broadband Service

Days after being complained about the quality of broadband services in Malaysia, Telekom Malaysia (TM) gave a preview of 100Mbps fiber-optics broadband access service at the Mont Kiara Pines Condominium in Sri Hartamas.

According to the source, Telekom plans to start the fiber-optics broadband service in the 3rd quarter of 2008. The initial connection speed will be 10Mbps. TM Malaysia Business CEO said it may take 2 to 3 years before the service becomes widely available.

What is fiber optics? – “A technology that uses glass (or plastic) threads (fibers) to transmit data. A fiber optic cable consists of a bundle of glass threads, each of which is capable of transmitting messages modulated onto light waves.” — webopedia

My two cents

First of all, don’t dream about 100Mbps broadband connection speed become available to you soon. It was only a preview, a demo that makes you drooling and dreaming.

Yes, it is a good news that we may get much faster Internet connection speed in the future. But, I doubt the fiber-optics broadband service will be available nationwide in 3 years.

I am still using a 1Mbps connection which disconnects during raining days and the “real speed” is not even fast enough to listen a low-bandwidth online radio broadcast.

I have been wishing for blazing fast broadband access for years. I think moving to big cities or neighbor country is faster than sitting and praying here.

    if this is THE fiber optic that we are talking about now, I hope that our broadband situation will be improving much much better! With fiber optic, the US is now enjoying 4MB per/sec internet speed (lowest) and 11MB per/sec (highest) with low monthly subscription ($40/month) and word has it that they are moving towards 20MB per/sec next year in January with still low monthly rate…If Malaysia is now to upgrade to a proper fiber optic..then, I do hope it will not affect the monthly charges…by far, Malaysia’s internet service is the most expensive in comparison to the other countries…

    hahha..1MB is not fast…streamyx is not fast…1MB is a laughing stock for internet users around the world..they call it internet connection using string attached to a pole…and yes, the solution is to move to a neighbouring countries where internet service is way 10 times better!
