The First Virus for Sony PSP!

Filed in: Gadgets, Security — October 8th, 2005

The first trojan virus that target on Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) is discovered by Symantec. Symantec Security Response marked he virus named “Trojan.PSPBrick” as “High Damage”.

The trojan will delete all critical system files on PSP and prevent it from restarting correctly! However, there is no infection reported yet. *phew*

Apparently, the virus infected PSP via Internet downloaded file.

Friedricks confirmed that the virus, which masquerades as a mod, is something the users have to download to deliberately get around the Sony PSP security system. People will not be affected if they don’t arbitrarily download unknown files. Unfortunately, those who may inadvertently install the Trojan.PSPBrick are out of luck. Symantec warns that it will delete critical system files and essentially break your PSP. “You’ll have to send it back to Sony for repairs,” said Friedricks.

Thought

Want to download PSP 2.0 firmware to PSP 1.5? Perhaps you need to reconsider about it or check the source of the file first?

The virus seems to be directly linked to Sony not wanting people to mod their PSP’s. The so called virus is just part of a hack to downgrade your PSP so people can go back to 1.5 to play homebrews. Symantec seems to be helping Sony cover their pocketbook is all. I installed this specific file, downgraded my PSP, and everything still works fine. It seems to be just a hoax.

@Rick: it could be a virus embedded in the ISO file. You could format the memory stick to clear it.
