The Most Commonly Used Password is “Password”

monkeyMaybe this sounds quite ironic but it is truth that the most commonly used password is “password”. The password does not serve the purpose of a password. Check out ThreadWatch for the top 10 commonly used passwords online.

I am surprised that the most popular animal used as password is “Monkey”, #6 in the list. How can it be?!

If you are using easy-to-guess password (e.g: dictionary word, birthday, name, phone number, IC, etc), please install the SecurePassword Generator firefox plugin or use the online password generator, if you are not Firefox user.

Then, jot down your passwords and keep it in a safe place. Yes, we have been told never to write down our passwords, but security experts from Microsoft and Apple said otherwise. So, listen to experts. :)

This is very true. Majority of my users request for either “password” or “123456″ as their login password.

Anyway, do consider Personal Vault to generate and store your password:

I use KeePass which is an excellent password manager. It is available as a installed program (http://keepass.info/), portable apps (http://portableapps.com/news/2007-04-16_-_keepass_portable_1.07), and also for PDA (http://keepasssd.sourceforge.net/) so your passwords are essentially following you around. Just remember a master password in your head… for the others, generate them!

Interesting indeed. That’s from “online” department…for other departments (Windows Login, server admin, router etc) I commonly encounter “admin” or “root” as the password… :-p

BTW, the longest password I ever set is a paragraph of song lyrics (include the spaces and symbols)…easy to remember, took forever to type :-p

    Might I suggest PassPack:

    http://www.passpack.com

It’s free. It’s secure. 24/7 web access to your passwords. No USB to tote around.

Supports data import and export, and has a built in password generator.
