The Reason Why She Stop Blogging

Filed in: Weblog, WordPress — September 6th, 2006

I just helped a friend clear over 8,000 spam comments of her WordPress blog. She had stop blogging for a long time due to the mass number of spams. Finally, her blog is clean now. :)

wordpress spam comments
A lot of WordPress spam comments

I installed Akismet antispam plugin for her WordPress, but it does not clear existing spam comments, which are carried over from MovableType blog. Therefore, I used “Paged Comment Editing” plugin to delete the spam comments manually (mass delete 1000 comments at each time).

Phew~ killing spams is fun! :D

Register before comment is easier for blogger, but harder for readers. You are not encouraging readers to comment in that way.

@Ajay D’Souza: nice guide. I am a happy Akismet problogger license user. Just make sure you enable Akismet as soon as your wordpress blog is online.

I got BB, SK2 and the SK2 Akismet Plugin, so I harness the power of all three to ensure I keep spam away :)

@Ajay D’Souza: I think it will increase false alarms as well, no? I used to use the combinations of antispam plugins, but later discovered that many good visitors are unable to submit their comments.

    I don’t think so.

Well, the reason being is first BB takes action. After that if a comment is submitted, SK2 runs its checks.

I don’t use Akismet plugin that is bundled with WP. I use the Sk2+Akismet plugin which is basically a plugin for SK2 which also looks up from Akismet.

From my experience that plugin isn’t all that necessary, because SK2 has managed to do an amazing job anyway.

I have also found that SK2 does a better job than Akismet, and hence refuse to shift from it.

I also have Moderation enabled in case a manually submitted spam comment gets thru. However, I don’t know how feasible it would be on your blog which is a lot more popular. I mean more work for you.
