Upgraded to WordPress 2.3

Finally, I have upgraded LiewCF.com to WordPress version 2.3.2 from version 2.2.x, after WordPress 2.3 released over 100 days.

It was a smooth upgrade. This time I deleted the WordPress (WP) files before upgrading. Previously, I only replace the WordPress files. The oldest WP file I have was “wp.php”(16 Mac 2006), which is a simplified version of WP index file.

After upgrading WordPress, I need to update the plugins I used. I like the plugin update notification of WP2.3. I updated 3/4 of my plugins.

Why upgrade so late?

Previously, I told you the reasons I didn’t upgrade to WP 2.3 are because of plugins, tags, blog editor, and new blog theme. Now, most plugins are compatible with WP 2.3. My blog editor, ecto, also support WP 2.3 at latest beta version. My new theme is done and it is WP 2.3 compatible (announce soon).

Manual tags to WordPress tags

I decided to give up to convert the manual technorati tags to WordPress tags. Manually editing the tags of each post is toooo much of work. I can’t figure out a way to do it fast (PHP calls, MySQL queries).

If anyone has the “manual HTML tags to WP tags” solution, I will reward him/her USD$50!

For your information, the next version for WordPress is version 2.5. WP 2.4 is skipped. You can expect MANY new features in WP 2.5, which scheduled to be released at the end of March 2008.

Update: Seems like ecto is still having tagging problem with WP 2.3… I will try MarsEdit instead.

Update: Just after I upgraded to version 2.3.2, WordPress released version 2.3.3 to fix a critical bug in xmlrpc.php and a few minor bugs.

@techsnack: I think it is better the keep the different in version number to minimal for wordpress upgrade in order to avoid some unexpected problems.

thanks for this post. as for me i just upgrade my blog to latest version which is 2.3.3. this is nightmare to me before because of afraid to loosing post, database,plugin etc.

because of hard to find a good tutorial that can convince me about upgrading, i wrote this process complete, start to end with snap shot.

OK on my blogs i found that upgrading make the wordpress blog disappear when later activating the plugins. The only way to see my blog again was to delete the last activated plugin directory, but i am – as many – using many plugins. Also the ADMIN internetface turns dead when trying to update. Also it happen when you click on new version in the plugin list.

Has anyone else had the problem of the latest upgrade deleting all the tags in previous post? I had this happen to several of my blogs. I hate upgrading! Seems something will go wrong on at least one blog!

Ecto 3 doesn’t seem to mind converting technorati tags to WP tags. Although I used Ecto 2 to create the tags, that might have made it easier for it to do the conversion (but I had changed the markup and I never told the old version).

BUT you have to pull down the old posts and hit repost, different servers seem to respond with different numbers of posts (when you pull down) so YMMV.
