The world’s first web server and web browser are created by Tim Berners-Lee in 1991 using a NeXT Computer at CERN.

The label on the computer read “This machine is a server, DO NOT POWER IT DOWN!!”

For your information, NeXT was founded in 1985 by Apple Computer co-founder Steve Jobs after his forced resignation from Apple. NeXTSTEP, the operating system on NeXT computer, was the mother of Apple’s Mac OS X today.

The World’s First web browser

The world’s first web browser is WorldWideWeb (no spaces). It was look like the following, except that it has no inline images and grey scale:

A quick tour of the screen is available here.

My two cents

It is amazing how the small box in 20 years ago has changed our world today.

As far as I can remember, my first web surfing was at 1996-1997.. it has been more than 10 years from now. How about yours?

I was using NeXT in 1991 too. I wouldn’t exactly agree with this as the FIRST web browser. Actually before this one, I was using Text Based browser and it did reach every part of the world too ( USA and limited in Europe only back then)

yeah… love NeXT too back then, in ’92.. way advance compared to PCs with windows3 & os/2. but I ended up cozying more with PowerMacs immediately after that. And 17 yrs later, I’m still with Steve Job’s stuff – macbook pro :)

Back in ’93, I was using NCSA Mosaic, lynx and MacWeb (netscape got out months later as 0.9b, and only couple yrs later when Microsoft finally introduced Internet Explorer in win95 – repackaged from Mosaic).

My first browsing was in 1993-1994 in the University. Mosaic was the browser and the pages was text-based mainly with a few graphics. And I also remember that we stayed some nights (all night on) in the University chatting on IRC and testing programs (daemons and other stuffs) by using small terminals with one-color displays. Wow, what a wonderful time.

I don’t think Steve Jobs would have known the emergence of the Internet. But he sure has been an explorer and pioneer for the Internet.
