WordPress Default 3-Columns is a three columns(content, sidebar1 and sidebar2) layout theme for WordPress 1.5 (tested on WP2.x), based on Kubrick theme.

WordPress Three Columns Kubrick Theme

What’s different?

Basically, I add one more column(sidebar) at the right, shorten the header height, and add sidebars to single post view.

Download:

three-col-kubrick.zip

Installation:

Upload the extracted folder(three-col-kubrick) to wp-content/themes, click on “Presentation” in the administration panel and select it from the list. Done.

Who are using this template?

Some popular blogs are using modified version of my three columns kubrick theme such as SlackerManager, VoIP Blog, and many others.

FAQ

  1. How to change sidebar background color?
    The sidebar background color is a background image, not CSS color. To change the color, you edit the “kubrickbg.png” image.
  2. Do you have a “sidebar-content-sidebar” 3 column kubrick theme?
    No for the moment. I will working on it.
  3. How do I make the entire header clickable?
    Open index.php. Find:

    <div id=”header”>

    and change the line to:

    <div id=”header”
    onclick=”location.href=’http://YOUR_BLOG_ADDRESS/’;”
    style=”cursor: pointer;”>
    </div>

    This will make the entire header a link.

Buy me coffee

Liked this 3 columns kubrick theme, please buy me a cup of coffee. :)

My two cents:

The three column theme serves my own needs. I was looking for three column kubrick theme, but nobody make one. So, I made it.

This is my first WP theme, though it is simply(took me a day) modifying the default WP theme. As a CSS newbie, I learned a lot from this experience.

P/S: If this is not what you are looking for, try the list of three columns WP themes or recommended WordPress themes.

Update: Felix Ker made a widgets-enabled version of the theme.

    Well done, dude !!

    Work until this late must be very tiring.
    Go catch a good sleep. :)

    Just a reminder, don’t forget about the 800×600 readers. :)

    Anyway, feel happy for you.

  2. Mark May 2, 2005 at 3:10 am #

    Great job…I was thinking about switching to a 3 column layout and I like the basic Kubrick!

  3. LcF May 2, 2005 at 8:13 am #

    thanks. :)
    the theme is still viewable under 800×600, just like Engadget.com.

  4. Ahmad Zaki May 4, 2005 at 3:30 pm #

    hey, nice idea of making one column for ads…:). It’s gonna help you with your income.

  5. LcF May 4, 2005 at 4:05 pm #

    ya.. i can put more blogads without disturb the content. :)

  6. Hendry May 10, 2005 at 11:06 am #

    Great work. I’ve also modified the default Kubrick WP 1.5 theme to add support for sidebar in single page and shorten the header graphic but your 3 columns hack is awesome. I would implement it on my site soon.

  7. LcF May 10, 2005 at 1:29 pm #

    thanks. I am thinking to modify it further to fit in 800×600 resolution…

  8. Hendry May 13, 2005 at 12:02 pm #

    I especially like BlogHerald‘s blog. The theme is very similar to Kubrick. The page id fits into 780 pixels width.

  9. LcF May 13, 2005 at 12:19 pm #

    @hendry: ya, I found BlogHerald after I released my 3-col theme. :roll:

  10. Náufrago May 21, 2005 at 6:28 pm #

    Hi LcF from Spain!. Many thanks for your great job, I was looking for something like this. Now I have a doubt, can I, easily, put the smaller column in the left side, or is it very complicated?.

    Greetings

  11. LcF May 22, 2005 at 12:32 am #

    @Náufrago: it will involve redesign the coding of wordpress theme.

  12. Náufrago May 22, 2005 at 10:15 am #

    Many thanks for answering, LcF. Hugs.

  13. LcF May 22, 2005 at 10:23 am #

    no problem. you have a nice blog. :)

  14. monkeypup June 20, 2005 at 9:59 am #

    Anyway to alter this to make one column on each side? I would LOVE it! If only I wasn’t an idiot with CSS….

  15. LcF June 20, 2005 at 11:13 am #

    thank you, monkeypup. the 3 column with left and right sidebar is in my plan. I will release a new 3 column kubrick theme soon.

  16. monkeypup June 21, 2005 at 2:00 am #

    Awesome. I can’t wait.

  17. jude July 25, 2005 at 8:43 pm #

    I no longer use explorer but many of the readers of a site I help run do. The site uses this theme and Internet Explorer doesn’t render the 3 columns properly. you can only see 2. Any idea how to fix this?

  18. LcF July 26, 2005 at 9:10 am #

    yes, there are some conflicts with IE’s CSS rendering.

  19. Steve July 28, 2005 at 5:15 am #

    Outstanding plugin. You Rock! Thank you very much for this great improvement.

    How can I move the blog roll links (and archive and meta) from right column to the left column?

    :-)
    Thanks, again!

  20. Andrew July 30, 2005 at 5:17 pm #

    yeah… great template… I too would like to know what to edit to make the columns either side…?

  21. HardinComp August 11, 2005 at 4:01 am #

    Let’s make that three who would like to have the small columns on either side. (I’m posting just to get notified when there’s a new comment, hopefully with info on splitting the small columns.)

  22. Mike August 15, 2005 at 12:59 pm #

    Great theme Liew! Could you tell me how to add the vertical bars in between the columns like you have on this site? Thanks!

  23. Arun Kumar August 23, 2005 at 12:09 pm #

    This is just what I was searching for..

    Now, how hard would it be to have it so a Google medium ad box shows up automatically between every couple of posts? Like Engadget, and some other Weblogs, Inc. blogs. I’ve installed WP a few times, but I haven’t really messed around with it too much.

  24. LcF August 23, 2005 at 12:59 pm #

    Arun Kumar: you mean adsense block after certain number of posts? Try http://wordpress.org/support/topic/12685

  25. Mark August 29, 2005 at 5:19 am #

    This is really terrific. Thanks!

    Any chance you could share your photoshop file of the header graphic so I can create other headers? Thanks!

  26. Alberto A-P September 1, 2005 at 6:03 pm #

    Hi!

    I’m really looking forward the sidebar-content-sidebar design. I’ve been trying to mess with the css file, but I haven’t been able to do it on myself :(

  27. gopal September 10, 2005 at 2:24 am #

    nice theme man! i have implemented it, there seem to be an issue of css in ie has anybody seen this? The text comes way to close to the right grey side, makes it look cramped.

    Can you perhaps tell me how i can i put the search bar and adlins on top together like you did?

  28. LcF September 15, 2005 at 5:40 pm #

    Yes, there are some IE CSS issues. Here is the current CSS stylesheet I am using for this site.

    Note: the current stysheet is for reference only. Do NOT apply it directly to the theme. I did alot hacks base on the public release version.

  29. khurrum October 13, 2005 at 7:01 am #

    Hello :)

    How did you get an ad above the columns with out messing up the alignment?

    thanks

  30. LcF October 13, 2005 at 10:20 am #

    khurrum: you may check out the source code. It is as simple as adding a css box in the top of sidebar.php

  31. khurrum October 13, 2005 at 10:21 pm #

    thank you :D

    I initially tried that and the whole menu moved to the left corner. But after that I added some content and it pushed the menu back into place :)

    thank you very much!

  32. Griff November 15, 2005 at 12:40 pm #

    Thank you very much for your 3-column design!

  33. WebtrafficJunkie November 27, 2005 at 3:34 am #

  34. WebtrafficJunkie November 29, 2005 at 2:44 am #

  35. CellphoneSavant December 20, 2005 at 11:01 am #

  36. Corra December 28, 2005 at 9:22 am #

    You inspired me to tinker with my 2 colum wordpress blog and I came up with this 3 column design . Somehow I was able to get the left column+content+right thing figured out. Email me with questions.

  37. LcF December 28, 2005 at 11:01 am #

    Corra: is it available for download?

  38. Corra December 28, 2005 at 11:09 am #

    Not yet. It’s a modified version of a 2-column theme I downloaded from WPThemes.info, and I am not sure about the licensing situation. Any ideas?

  39. LcF December 28, 2005 at 12:03 pm #

    Corra: you may want to contact the theme author for licensing info. Usually, they are open source. :)

    How do you add the wordpress navigation to your 3 column Kubrick theme?

  45. LcF February 5, 2006 at 1:23 am #

    you can adjust the CSS code of wordpress navigation bar to match with 3 column kubrick theme: modify the “top” value of #supernav

  46. Tim February 7, 2006 at 3:21 pm #

    Why don’t images in posts show up when you select a category? Was that done on purpose? If so, how do you allow the images to show?

    Example (Doesn’t show any images):
    http://www.liewcf.com/blog/archives/category/gadgets/

  47. LcF February 7, 2006 at 4:09 pm #

    @Tim: yes, it is done on purpose. The category view use a differrent template tag to show only post excerpts.

    You can goto http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags for a list of wordpress template

  48. BigP February 16, 2006 at 1:38 pm #

  49. Chris February 23, 2006 at 7:06 am #

    Question, would you happen to have the left and right column version handy for this theme? I remember you mentioning it and I would love to see what you came up with.

    Chris

  50. LcF February 23, 2006 at 9:18 am #

    @Chris: yes, probably…

    How can I get one sidebar on the left and one on the right as on http://www.filmeundso.de ????

  53. LcF March 5, 2006 at 10:51 am #

    @Stefan: I haven’t create a sidebar-content-sidebar theme yet.

  54. TLB March 5, 2006 at 3:01 pm #

    Tweaking the CSS and templates to achieve this effect shouldn’t be that difficult? What do you think LcF ?

  55. Evan March 7, 2006 at 2:21 pm #

    this may have been asked before, but I was just wondering if there is a way to put vertical lines in between each column, or atleast a vertical line seperating the main content from the sidebar?

  56. LcF March 7, 2006 at 2:43 pm #

    @Evan: an easiest way is to add a vertical line in the column background image.

  57. Evan March 8, 2006 at 3:48 am #

    thanks

  58. Thilak March 8, 2006 at 4:29 am #

    Hi, I downloaded your Theme (3 Column Kubrick) and changed its header to monochrome, now it looks superb, try it dude. (Blue look boring)

    And I wanted to ask you a question.
    I tried to sign up at Chitika but i can’t because they just won’t accept me.
    And is Adbrite available in India (I mean can i install it in my blog, will get paid)

  63. DiFFeReNT April 24, 2006 at 8:38 am #

    Perfect, exactly what I needed.
    By the way, you included some hidden Mac files in the zip.
    You know, the “__MACOSX” and “._footer.php”.

    Just FYI, nice theme.

  64. LcF April 24, 2006 at 9:52 am #

    @DiFFeReNT: yeah, I zipped the files on Mac OS X and those hidden files are automatically included. *sigh*
    Just ignore the files.

  65. newdisco April 24, 2006 at 1:30 pm #

    is this theme under any kind of cc license?

  68. Dev June 6, 2006 at 12:33 pm #

  69. Jon June 9, 2006 at 9:35 am #

    LcF…

    Any change you have a wider version of the stylesheet? Say 980? The more I tinker’d around the more I messed it up. Would like left (main column) about 140px wider and the other two about 10px wider each.

    Thanks for doing a great job!

  70. LcF June 9, 2006 at 6:49 pm #

    Jon: thank you for the suggestions. :)

  84. LcF October 22, 2006 at 11:26 am #

    @Jimbo: to move the header to left, you need to edit the H1 CSS style in style.css file – text-aligh: left;

  90. Santa February 17, 2007 at 8:30 pm #

    Great theme, just need some help on:
    1. Increasing the header height to 200px. I tried editing the style.css and header.php and still doesn’t work.
    2. In header.php, there are instructions about replacing the header with own image. Instructions say “personalheader.jpg” however path shows “personalheader.png”. I’ve either both by placing in the images directory but doesn’t work. Do have to delete the rotator folder?
    HELP!

  91. LcF February 17, 2007 at 9:13 pm #

    @santa: 1. In order to increase the header height, you need to edit the header image as well.
    2. The original theme is using JPG format but I changed to PNG because better quality and smaller size. In order to use “personalheader.png”, you need to uncomment the line of code by removing the /* and */ around it.

  92. Martin Hurley March 12, 2007 at 11:49 pm #

    Hi,

    I have a few questions:

    Does this theme work ok with the newest version of WordPress?

    Also can I add a picture (image) instead of what is there now? How do I do that?

    How do you add to and manage the sidebars? Do you use a plug in like sidebar modules?

    Will the adsense modules show up on all pages?

    How do you drop in the Google search at the top of the page like you have done?

    Sorry for all the questions… keep up the good work.

    Martin

  93. LcF March 13, 2007 at 1:53 am #

    @Martin Hurley: the theme works for WP2+ but not optimized.

    You can use your own pic to replace the header image found in /images/ folder.

    I manage the sidebar manually by editing the sidebar source code.

    If you put adsense ads in single.php or sidebar.php, it will showed in all pages.

    For the google search form, you can refer to my page source code.

    Hope these help. :)

    Hi

    I need help urgently, I have installed WP 2.3 and I want to modify Default Kubric theme according to my needs.

    Can you plz guide me through this?? Can you plz tell me how to do it.?? I am really confused.. I have html and CSS knowledge. Do I have to have PHP knowledge too.. in order to work with WP.???

    Plz point me to right direction.. where I can find easy to understand tutorial about customizing Default Kubric theme to match with my website.

  136. Neil February 5, 2008 at 6:23 pm #

    Hi Jyo, I have just used this http://codex.wordpress.org/Designing_Headers to help me, I know nothing about WP code and PHP but managed to change the colour and upload my logo and push the header text around a bit. I am still struggling with the smaller header text though, hopefully I can get some help to move this to the right, everything I have tried doesnt seem to work. So I have now asked for help. I would normally not ask, as I know its better to learn by mistakes.

    Neil

  137. Jyo G. February 12, 2008 at 1:27 am #

    Hi Neil,

    Thanks for your reply and valuable input. Just like you, I also believe in learning through my own efforts. but this time I am in hurry. :D

    I need to arrange my blog as early as possible so that I can start out with promotional activities. Anyway.. I do know HTML and CSS. so with the help of that I have been successful in changing layout and appearance of my WP blog according to my website layout. Plz check my blog..

    http://www.just-health.in/weight-loss

    But I need help with the navigation bar. I don’t understand how to manage it. I hope someone experienced from such high volumed site can help me.

    Anyway.. solution for your problem. If you are using WP Kubric default theme then you can locate ../wp-content/themes/default/style.css

    Open it and try to find out following code…

    #headerimg .description {
    font-size: 1.2em;
    text-align: center;}

    Change text -align to right and you will see small text in the header moving towards right side of the browser.

    Similarly try to find out

    h1 {
    font-size: 4em;
    text-align: center;
    }

    change “center” to “right” and this way your main heading text will move towards right …

    it’s as simple as that. Hope it helps you in a way.. If you need any more help try to feed the feedback form on my site.. and thus I will get your email ID.

    I am just struggling to find out any help for managing my navigation bar.. but not found any yet.. :-(

    bye.. regards..

Yes I have checked the forums for an answer and I have tried them all. Does anyone have the “ERROR: WordPress requires Cookies but your browser does not support them or they are blocked.” messaqe and has any one cured it or got a cure. Having tried everything I have asked my host for help to delete or reset my mySQL database as for some reason they don,t have any default access panel from their site. Has anyone got any experience in this area?

    Ölüm Çiçekleri: you don’t need to know PHP to edit the theme. Since you know CSS and HTML, you only need to refer the WordPress tags at codex.wordpress.org to understand the theme. Basically, you can edit CSS stylesheet to change the layout.

    Nice work. It’s nice and simple, and can definitely be used. I’m not usually a fan of three columns, but I think you’ve done well in making the left column the bigger one. A lot of three columned themes make the middle column or the right column the bigger one. I don’t think this works too well, things seem to cluttered that way. But yours isn’t cluttered at all, and I like the search bar idea. You may have just converted me into a three column user!

  33. HowTo: Make the move to Wordpress from a hosted service at My Africa - December 20, 2006

    [...] Develop a theme. If you aren’t interested in mucking around in css, php or html, WordPress has a huge number of free templates available. These are pretty much just plug and play. If you want to customize a bit, you’ll have to get your hands dirty. For this site, I used liewcf’s three column Kubrick design as a jumping off point. I haven’t done much to it aside from making the page wider and changing the header parameters. [...]

  34. Wordpress Theme SEO : To Make Money Online - February 27, 2007

    [...] Eventually the closest match that I found to a WordPress theme exhibiting good SEO is the current design for this website which is Three columns kubrick template by LiewCF. However although very good the standard theme design by LiewCF still required some work on my part. The H1 header tag in the LiewCF standard version is used for the title of the blog in my case ‘To Make Money Online’ but good SEO requires that the individual post title contains the very important H1 tag. [...]
