WordPress comment setting:Automactically close comments on old articles

Recently, one thing puzzle me about my blog is that the blog posts’ comment were automatically closed, without any “automatic close comment plugin”.

Previously, I was using Disqus and it has option to automatically close comment for blog posts after certain days. I already uninstalled Disqus plugin on my blog and comments should not automatically close anymore. But that’s not in my case. Comments are still closed automatically.

Guess what, a simple Google search reminded me that WordPress, in fact, has the automatically close comments setting!

WordPress auto close comments setting

Under WordPress Discoussion Settings (WordPress Admin Panel ➤ Settings ➤ Discussion), there is a setting “Automatically close comments on articles older than ZZZ days”.

Tick the checkbox to enable automatically close comments. In my case, untick to disable it. The ZZZ value set the days required before automatic close comments for a blog post. Example: 7 days and comment will close after 1 week.

Should you automatically close comments?

The main reason to enable automatically close comments on articles is to stop spam comments on old posts.

However, with comment closed, you also blocking visitors to your old articles and kill any further discussions on the topics.

I love readers feedback, thus I will leave the comment open. I am not worry about spam comments, because there are tons of anti-spam plugins to do the job.

Do you automatically close comments on old blog posts?
