Gphone EVO Octa-core Android smartphone review

Gphone EVO is a 8-core Android smartphone powered by Mediatek processor, the first true octa-core processor for smartphone. It was launched in Malaysia in April 2014 .

Read on for my Gphone EVO unboxing video and phone review.

Unboxing Gphone EVO

Gphone EVO is nicely packed in a white box. Open the box cover and you will see the 5-inch Gphone EVO in glossy black colour.

Pick up the phone and you will find its accessories in white colour in the box, including miro-USB cable, earphones, charger, and – surprisingly – USB on-the-go cable.

With every purchase of Gphone EVO octa-core phone, you will also receive a FREE phone case with screen protector. It provides full protection to your phone and double as a phone stand. Nice!

Gphone EVO has a slim phone body with full glossy black colour. Top and bottom are curved edges. On the front, speaker with chrome bezel is at the top and 3 touch buttons (menu, home, back) are at the bottom.

Volume rocker is located at the phone’s left side. Power button is at the right side. Micro-USB port and headphone jack are at the top. You reach the phone’s bottom to open the back cover.

At the back, you see the phone’s primary camera with silver ring and LED flash. Speaker is at the phone’s back bottom.

Open the back cover, you see two SIM card slot, a microSD memory card slot, and a Li-ion 2000 mAh removable battery.

True Octa Core processor

Gphone EVO is powered by MediaTek world’s first true Octa-Core processor (1.7GHz). The 8 independent cores are fully scalable. It uses full power (8 cores) for more demanding Android apps, and using only 1 core for lightweight task to save battery life – gives you the best performance-per-watt.

When playing mobile games optimized for 8 cores, such as Modern Combat 5, you will enjoy a new level of realism 3D gaming with unique visual effects.

Watch this Modern Combat 5 trailer and notice the stunning visual effects you will get on your octa-core smartphone:

Like to watch videos on the go? MediaTek Octa-Core processor supports 1080p Full HD and 4K2K Ultra HD videos. Beside general video codecs, it also support the latest HEVC (H.265) and Google VP9 video codecs for ultra hd video streaming.

Gphone EVO Review

In my Gphone EVO benchmark tests, it scored 27,288 in AnTuTu Benchmark, similar performance as 2013 flagship smartphones.

In Quadrant benchmark, it scored 8,907 and scored 3,179 in AnTuTu 3Drating Benchmark.

Other than 8-core processor, Gphone EVO is a 5-inch HD display (1280×720) smartphone with 1GB RAM and 16GB phone storage space. You can expand the storage space using microSD memory card up to 32GB.

The Android phone is running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and upgradable to Android 4.4 Kitkat.

Gphone EVO is equipped with 13MP auto focus rear camera with LED flash and 5MP front camera. The camera has a range of build-in image enhancement features to take your perfect pictures.

5MP front camera is great for taking selfie photos and the photo resolution is large enough to be printed on photobook.

Another notable feature is supporting Dual SIM Dual Standby with one active 3G at one time. Meaning, you can have two different phone numbers active at the same time in Gphone EVO.

Unlike some other smartphones, Gphone EVO uses a simple and clean user interface. The rounded corners app icons are cute! It does not have many pre-installed apps to take up your precious phone storage space.

It includes useful apps out of the box, such as AVG Antivirus, Kingsoft Office suite, and TouchPal X powerful keyboard input method.

Launching and switching apps are smooth. I did not have any issue during my review period. Gphone EVO works very well for my daily phone usage: browsing web, reading news, watching YouTube.
